Plasticity
We Become What We Do
As defined in www.dictionary.com, the word 'plasticity' means:
the capability of being molded, receiving shape, or being made to assume a desired form: as in, the plasticity of social institutions; the great plasticity of clay.
This concept is exciting to me in that it expresses potentiality and consequence. If we as beings have plasticity, then we are being shaped by that which influences us. This can include our own practices, intakes, people we hang out with, our thoughts, etc. The body changes in response to exercise and movement or lack thereof, to nutrition and hydration status, to stresses. The mind develops and evolves in response to challenges and learning.
'Neuroplasticity' is this quality as it pertains to our nervous systems - brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, individual neurons. We develop pathways of thought and function by learning new things and adapting to a changing environment. And this process happens throughout our lives, not just as babies and children.
So if indeed I am continuing to develop well into adulthood, like it or not, how should this affect my choices and actions?
